Books About Nothing
The 'show about nothing' is one of the most productive artistic premises of the 20th century. Literature has its own tradition of nothing — and the Archive's books are its most literal expression.
Beckett and the void
Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot is a play in which two people wait for someone who never arrives. Nothing happens, twice. Murphy sits in a rocking chair, trying to think about nothing. Beckett's nothing is meaningful, weighted, and highly literary.
The Archive's literal nothing
EW does not philosophize about nothing — it performs nothing. The book's content is one repeated word, which contains no narrative information, no character development, no plot. The nothing is not thematic; it is structural.
