Experimental Literature
Experimental literature challenges conventional expectations about story, language, structure, typography, repetition or the relationship between a reader and a book.
Common techniques
- Extreme repetition
- Unusual constraints
- Nonlinear or fragmented structure
- Minimal or restricted language
- Self-referential or conceptual formats
Why constraints can create meaning
Limiting the material available to a writer can make the limitation itself visible. The reader becomes aware of form, expectation and the physical object of the book.
Archive example
EW reduces its verbal material to a single repeated expression and uses the resulting constraint as the central concept.
