What Is Dark Comedy?

Dark comedy, or black comedy, finds the funny in subjects that are usually treated with gravity: death, illness, failure, violence and human cruelty. The humor comes from the contrast between the severity of the subject and the irreverence of the treatment.

Why dark comedy works

Dark humor creates relief by treating a taboo subject as if it were normal. The laughter often comes from recognition — this terrible thing is real, and laughing at it is a way of acknowledging it without being destroyed by it. Gallows humor, the comedy of soldiers and emergency workers, is the clearest example: laughing in the face of mortality as a survival mechanism.

Dark comedy vs absurdism

Absurdist humor is about incongruity, broken logic and pointlessness — it doesn't require a difficult subject. Dark comedy specifically mines uncomfortable territory for laughs. The two can overlap: a work can be simultaneously absurd and dark. But many absurdist works are completely inoffensive in subject matter; they're strange rather than troubling.

Dark comedy vs satire

Satire uses comedy to critique — it has a target and an argument. Dark comedy does not need a target; it can be dark simply because the subject is heavy and the treatment is light. See: absurdism vs satire, literary satire guide.

The Archive and dark comedy

The Archive's books are not dark comedy in the traditional sense — they don't mine suffering or taboo. But they share dark comedy's willingness to violate a convention (the serious book format) for a comedic effect. The closest relative is anti-humor: the joke is in the refusal to deliver what was promised. See: anti-humor guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is dark comedy?

Dark comedy, or black comedy, is humor about subjects normally treated seriously — death, illness, suffering, violence, tragedy. The humor comes from treating these subjects lightly, which creates both relief and discomfort.

Is dark comedy the same as absurdism?

No. Absurdism is about incongruity and broken logic. Dark comedy is about finding humor in difficult subjects. They can overlap but are distinct modes.

Why do people laugh at dark humor?

Dark humor creates relief by allowing acknowledgment of a difficult truth without being overwhelmed by it. Laughter is a way of processing what would otherwise be purely threatening or painful.
