What is Self-Deprecating Humor?
Self-deprecating humor makes the speaker the joke — pointing at their own failures, limitations, or embarrassments. It is one of the most disarming forms of comedy.
Why self-deprecation works
Self-deprecating humor disarms the audience by demonstrating that the speaker can see their own limitations clearly. It creates intimacy — the comedian is not superior; they are in the same boat as the listener.
