HMPH

HMPH is an expression of disapproval, skepticism, or dismissive disdain

What HMPH does

HMPH is the sound of not being impressed. It is skepticism compressed into a closed-mouth exhale. Unlike MEH, which is neutral, HMPH has an edge — a small contempt.

HMPH as literary candidate

HMPH is almost entirely nasal — produced with mouth closed and air pushed through the nose. Its orthography is unusual (the PH at the end), making it visually distinctive. A 261-page book of HMPH would be sustained skepticism in print.
